Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself

by Sarah Hill, Founder & CEO of MoonstoneSeven

Hi, I’m Sarah, the founder of MoonstoneSeven, and the woman who once filmed tutorials with my kids, while figuring out their curls.

When I first started posting online (@naturallycurlykids), it wasn’t to build a brand. It was to help other moms like me, moms of mixed-race kids who were suddenly staring down a head full of beautiful curls that didn’t behave like their own. I knew my girls’ hair was different from mine, and I was determined to learn how to care for it. As I learned, I shared, not because I had all the answers, but because I believed other moms deserved to feel confident doing their child’s hair too. I was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, which is one of the most diverse cities, but also most segregated cities in the country. You better believe I was not going to be the white mom who let her mixed kids walk around with unkept hair because she didn’t take the time to learn.

I learned, I shared, I grew.

The Turning Point

What most people didn’t see was that behind the camera, I was still straightening my own hair, constantly. I’d style my daughters’ curls with so much love and intention, but I hadn’t yet extended that same care to myself. I told myself my hair was just “frizzy,” not wavy. I didn’t think my texture belonged in any curly conversation.

Then one day, my oldest daughter asked me if I could straighten her hair. My heart sank. In that moment, I realized she was learning by watching me, not by listening to me. I looked at her and thought, You have your whole life to ruin your hair... why start now? That day, I put the flat iron away for good. Cold turkey, after 20 years! I decided to walk the same walk I was teaching my girls, to embrace my God-given beauty. That was August 2019, and I haven’t looked back since.

Through that process, I learned that curl care isn’t about “type.” It’s about understanding your density, porosity, and texture because healthy hair is universal. Straight, wavy, curly, coily, it’s all beautiful once you know how to nurture it.

Who I Am, Beyond the Brand

Outside of MoonstoneSeven, I’m a Midwest girl at heart, born and raised in Milwaukee, shaped by a city that taught me early on how culture, identity, and community can exist side by side… and sometimes painfully apart. That contrast mattered to me. It still does.

I’m a creative by training and by nature. I earned my degree in graphic design and spent years as a creative director, learning how to build brands, tell stories, and design products that feel intentional not just pretty. That background is why MoonstoneSeven has always cared about details most people don’t think about: how something feels in your hands, how it functions in real life, and how it makes you feel when you use it.

I’m also deeply rooted in faith and family. I believe we’re called to steward what we’re given, our gifts, our children, our bodies, and our stories. Motherhood changed me in ways I didn’t expect. It softened me, challenged me, and ultimately gave me the courage to build something that aligned with my values, not just my resume.

At my core, I’m someone who believes learning is love. If I don’t know something, I will figure it out. If I figure it out, I will share it. That’s always been the heartbeat behind everything I’ve built.

The Birth of the Hair Plop

As I started taking care of my own hair, I discovered a method called “plopping.” It helped curls dry more defined with little to no frizz, but at that time I was using an old t-shirt, and it was awkward, heavy, and honestly, annoying. I searched for something made for the job, but all I could find were turbans or towels that twisted and tugged the hair. Nothing honored the technique itself.

So, I made my own. With my background as a Creative Director, I sketched ideas and called my sister, who happens to be a seamstress, and together we created the very first Hair Plop. I started using it on myself and my daughters, teaching people how to plop their hair online while secretly working on something bigger in the background... a website, packaging, branding, and a dream that maybe, just maybe, this could become something real.

Building a Brand from the Ground Up

While educating people on kids curl care, I kept saying to myself, “One like, one follow, one share — it’s all an opportunity to help somebody.” And that belief built the foundation for MoonstoneSeven.

Using what I’d learned from years in product development, procurement, and creative direction, I figured out how to bring my handmade prototype to life at scale. We officially released our first product, the Hair Plop, on April 17, 2021, right in the height of COVID. I was five months pregnant at the time, balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, and my full-time job as a creative director. I was exhausted, fulfilled, terrified, and proud, all at once.

I did that for nearly a year, burning the candle at both ends, until I finally asked myself what no longer brought me joy. The answer was clear: working for someone else. So I bet on myself. On my family. On this brand. And I haven’t looked back.

What MoonstoneSeven Represents

MoonstoneSeven isn’t just about hair. It’s about belonging. It’s about showing up for yourself the way you show up for others. It’s about my daughters who inspired everything from the start. And it’s about every person who has ever looked in the mirror and thought, “I don’t fit the mold.”

Our mission is simple: to create beautiful, functional products that make it easier to love your natural self. To teach, to uplift, and to build a community that celebrates real texture, real confidence, and real stories.

Where We Are Now

Today, MoonstoneSeven has grown far beyond my kitchen table. We’ve shipped to over 40 countries, partnered with salons who believe in what we stand for, and developed a line of curl-care staples — from our Satin Sleeper and Hydra Hold Curl Defining Gel to our Miracle Moisture Oil and accessories designed to make care feel like a ritual.

But through it all, the heart of this brand hasn’t changed. My husband, Dashawn, and I still make sure every order is packed with care and intention. Every product we create still begins with the same question: how can this help someone feel more confident in their natural texture?

The Heart Behind It All

I’m Sarah Hill, a mom, a creative, a believer, and the woman behind the brand that started with a t-shirt, a dream, and a lot of late nights. MoonstoneSeven was never just about hair, it’s about transformation, faith, and choosing to show up as your authentic self.

Every order we ship, every message we share, and every curl we help someone care for, it all goes back to that same mission: helping people feel seen, capable, and confident in who they are. That’s what keeps me here, still building, still dreaming, still believing that beauty starts with belonging.

With gratitude and love,
Sarah Hill
